Intraocular lenses

Quick answer

During cataract surgery, the clouded lens is replaced with a permanent intraocular lens. Choosing the lens is one of the most important decisions in the surgery, since it largely determines how much you'll depend on glasses afterward.

Monofocal lens

Corrects vision at a single distance (usually far); the option covered by most insurance plans.

Toric lens

Also corrects corneal astigmatism, improving visual sharpness without needing glasses for astigmatism.

Multifocal / premium lens

Provides a range of vision at several distances — far, intermediate and near — significantly reducing your dependence on glasses.

There's no single "best" lens for everyone: the choice depends on your prescription, your eye's overall health, and how much you value being free of glasses day to day. This is discussed in detail at your pre-surgical consultation.
