A chalazion is chronic inflammation of a blocked meibomian gland, appearing as a lump or bump within the eyelid, generally painless, though it can cause discomfort or tenderness in its early stage.
Many chalazia resolve on their own or with conservative management — warm compresses and gentle massage — within the first few weeks. However, when it persists for several weeks, grows significantly, or affects vision or appearance, surgical curettage is recommended.
Chalazion curettage is a brief, outpatient procedure done under local anesthesia, in which the contents of the blocked gland are drained through a small incision, usually on the inner surface of the eyelid, leaving no visible scar.
