Eyelid reconstruction is the surgery that restores the eyelid's structure and function after it has lost tissue, whether from trauma, a burn, or — most commonly — after removing a benign or malignant eyelid tumor.
The primary goal is always functional before cosmetic: restoring the eyelid's ability to close completely and protect the eye, since an eyelid that doesn't close properly can expose the cornea and lead to serious complications, such as corneal ulcers.
Depending on how much tissue was lost, the technique may require skin flaps from neighboring eyelid tissue, skin grafts, or mucosal grafts, always aiming for a result that is functional and, as much as possible, cosmetically in harmony with the rest of the face.
