What sets us apart: Dry eye diagnosis and treatment are handled directly by our cornea specialist: dry eye falls within that same specialty, so it's never handed off to someone else or treated with a one-size-fits-all approach.

General description

Dry eye syndrome is one of the most common causes of ocular discomfort: burning, foreign-body sensation, fluctuating vision and visual fatigue. Not all dry eye is the same: it can be evaporative (the most common type, caused by Meibomian gland dysfunction), caused by insufficient tear production, or a combination of both. We evaluate your tear quality, quantity and ocular surface health to identify the specific cause and design a personalized treatment plan, rather than simply prescribing more drops. For persistent Meibomian gland dysfunction, IPL (intense pulsed light) can be a useful adjuvant therapy; we don't perform it in our own office, so when it's needed we refer you to our team's dermatologist, who handles the skin evaluation and procedures.

Here's the process at Vision Clinic

1
Tear and ocular surface evaluation. We evaluate the eyelids and lashes, and the conjunctiva, and use different staining tests to identify which type of dry eye you have. In cases that require it, we perform meibography and measure tear break-up time (Schirmer test), to define the right treatment for each patient.
2
Artificial tears and eyelid hygiene. First line of treatment: we choose the right formula for your type of dry eye and teach you daily eyelid-margin hygiene.
3
Warm compresses. These help thin the secretion from the Meibomian glands and improve drainage.
4
Anti-inflammatory drops. Used when there's a significant inflammatory component on the ocular surface.
5
Follow-up. We adjust the plan based on your response to treatment.

When is it worth getting evaluated?

It's worth getting evaluated if any of these apply to you:

You have persistent burning, itching, or a gritty, foreign-body feeling in your eyes.

You spend many hours in front of screens and notice tired, irritated eyes or blurry vision by the end of the day.

You use artificial tears more than 4 times a day and your symptoms aren't improving.

You've already been diagnosed with dry eye or Meibomian gland dysfunction and haven't received specific treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does LASIK cause dry eye?

It's common to feel increased dryness during the first weeks or months after LASIK, because the procedure temporarily affects the corneal surface nerves. In most patients it's temporary and resolves as the nerves regenerate. That's why we evaluate your ocular surface before any refractive surgery and treat pre-existing dry eye first.

How many times a day can I use artificial tears?

It depends on the formula and your specific case, but if you find yourself needing them more than 4 times a day consistently, it's time for an evaluation — there may be an underlying cause that would benefit from more targeted treatment, not just more drops.

Is IPL for dry eye done in-office?

IPL (intense pulsed light) is an adjuvant therapy for persistent Meibomian gland dysfunction. We don't perform it directly in our office; when it's needed, we refer you to our team's dermatologist, who handles the skin evaluation and procedures.
