Blepharoplasty is the surgery that removes excess skin and, at times, fat from the upper or lower eyelid. With age, it's normal for eyelid skin to lose elasticity; in some cases this is purely cosmetic, while in others, the excess skin droops over the lash line and reduces peripheral visual field, which can be confirmed with a visual field test.

Identifying which case applies to you determines the approach to the procedure and, at times, whether it's covered by medical insurance, since functional blepharoplasty — when documented visual field impairment is present — is often considered medically necessary rather than purely cosmetic.

At Vision Clinic, our oculoplastic specialist evaluates both aspects — cosmetic and functional — at the same visit, to define the right approach together with you.
