General description
The orbit is the bony socket that houses and protects the eye. When affected by trauma, tumors, or conditions such as thyroid disease, it may require specialized surgical management. Dr. Cristina Plata, our oculoplastic specialist, evaluates and treats these conditions, always aiming to preserve visual function and facial appearance.
What does the surgery involve?
Biopsies
When an orbital tumor is suspected, a tissue sample is taken to define the diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
Orbital fracture
Surgical repair of fractures in the orbital bones, usually caused by trauma, to restore the eye's position and prevent complications such as double vision or a sunken eye appearance.
Orbital decompression
A procedure that creates more space within the orbit, indicated for example in thyroid eye disease causing proptosis (bulging eyes), relieving pressure on the optic nerve and improving facial appearance.
Evisceration and enucleation
When it's necessary to remove the eye's contents (evisceration) or the entire eyeball (enucleation) due to severe trauma, chronic pain, or tumors, the most appropriate procedure is performed for each case, generally placing an orbital implant to maintain volume and later facilitate prosthesis fitting.
Anophthalmic socket management
Ongoing care and monitoring of the socket left after the eye is removed, to maintain its health and prepare it for the fitting of an ocular prosthesis.

Post-surgical care
Care depends on the procedure performed —from a biopsy requiring minimal care to larger surgeries such as enucleation, which require several days of rest and specific care—, which Dr. Cristina Plata explains in detail before your surgery. We include, at no cost, the post-surgical kit your case requires.
Post-surgical follow-up
Your recovery follow-up is always carried out by Dr. Cristina Plata, with one month of follow-up consultations at no cost.
