General description
SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is an advanced refractive technique that corrects nearsightedness and astigmatism through a minimal incision, without creating a corneal flap as in LASIK. This can translate into greater corneal biomechanical stability and a comfortable recovery. It is an attractive option for active patients or corneas that call for a more conservative approach.
What does the surgery involve?
The procedure is done in a single step with a femtosecond laser: a small lenticule of corneal tissue is created and removed through a tiny 2–4 mm incision, with no flap required. It's outpatient, takes just a few minutes per eye, and is performed with anesthetic drops.
Post-surgical care
Because there's no flap, the corneal surface is more stable from the start, though relative rest is still recommended for the first few days, along with avoiding eye rubbing, swimming, and dusty environments. Antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops are prescribed for the first week and lubricant for several weeks. We include, at no cost, the post-surgical kit with your starter drops.
Post-surgical follow-up
Follow-up is carried out by the same surgeon who performed your SMILE procedure, and includes one month of consultations at no cost to give you peace of mind throughout recovery.
