LASIK

Advantages
- Very fast visual recovery: many patients notice a marked improvement within the first 24 hours.
- Painless, outpatient procedure.
- Decades of worldwide experience back its safety and results.
Things to consider
- Requires the cornea to have adequate thickness to create the flap.
- The flap generally makes it not the first choice for contact sports.
- As with any surgery, there's a minimal risk of infection or a different-than-expected healing response.
SMILE
It's the newest of the three techniques: instead of a flap, a small lenticule of corneal tissue is removed through a minimal incision of just 2–4 mm. Learn more about SMILE.
Advantages
- Minimal incision (2-4 mm), with no flap required.
- Greater corneal biomechanical stability: a good option if you play contact sports.
- Comfortable, fast recovery.
Things to consider
- It's a newer technique, so not every surgeon has mastered it.
- Not every patient is a candidate: it depends on your prescription and your cornea.
- As with any surgery, there's a minimal risk of complications, though studies support its safety.
PRK

- Requires no flap at all: ideal for thinner corneas.
- Long-term results just as predictable as LASIK or SMILE.
- A good option when certain ocular surface conditions are present.
Things to consider
- More gradual visual recovery: days, rather than hours.
- There can be more discomfort in the first few days while the surface heals.
- Requires consistent use of drops during recovery.
